Climate Bills at the 2024 Oregon Legislature
The Legislative Session has officially begun! We had a great group join us for a legislative preview of Climate Bills at the 2024 Oregon Legislature last week. We were really inspired by the conversation and look forward to carrying that energy into the legislative session.
🎬 Here is a recording of the event. You can also watch above. Check it out and feel free to share it with friends/family/colleagues.
Some of the priority bills Families for Climate will be tracking and supporting this year include:
Passing the COAL Act—HB 4083 Oregon has shown a commitment to moving away from coal for electricity. Now we must divest public funds from coal and disallow future investments in the industry.
Updating Oregon’s Emissions Reduction Goals—SB 1559 Replaces goals set for 2010 and 2020 with goals for 2030 and beyond that will keep the planet to 1.5°C of warming (or less), changing from 75% to 95% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in Oregon by 2050 and net zero standards for the remaining emissions.
Investing in Oregon’s Marine Reserves—HB 4132 Oregon’s marine ecosystem is an abundant ecological resource. HB 4132 funds ongoing monitoring and research in the Marine Reserves, which help maintain ocean health, contributing to a more sustainable climate, and supports community engagement.
Establishing Offshore Wind Labor Standards—HB 4080 Preparations for a cleaner energy grid should consider the needs of all Oregonians. HB 4080 sets up labor standards for offshore wind and creates a roadmap for engagement.
This Google doc contains a summary of bills discussed on the call, including the full list of bills comprising the Oregon Legislature’s Environmental Caucus’ priorities list (as mentioned by Rep. Gamba). You can learn more about the House Environmental Caucus and sign up for their email updates here.
