Earth Day Re-Cap: Thank You for Celebrating with Us!

We Loved Celebrating Earth Day with You All

For a few hours on Saturday, April 22nd, the clouds parted, the sun came out, and our faces got a little warmer. This happened just in time to celebrate Earth Day with this incredible community. It not only felt like a great day to celebrate this planet of ours, it also felt like we were coming out of hibernation. It warmed our hearts to see so many of you in person and it’s getting us excited for a spring and summer full of many FFC events.

In the meantime, we wanted to share some highlights from our Earth Day event!

  • So many people celebrated with us! We estimate there were approximately 300 (!) people who joined the event.

  • You got some garden starts! Families for Climate shared some plant love with so many new gardeners and gave away ~100 Giant Sequoia saplings, native plant seedlings, veggies, and seeds.

  • You learned about the environmental and climate solution work going on in our community! These great organizations provided some great info to attendees:

    • Talk About Trees shared knowledge about how trees spread seeds.

    • Alisha Howard from Deep Rootz Worms and Ecotrust taught everyone about vermicompost and shared about building your own worm composting bin and fun worm facts. Kids could explore the compost and hunt for compost critters.

    • The Columbia Slough Watershed Council shared the role of native plants and trees in keeping our watershed clean and healthy.

    • Electrify PDX shared how home electrification is an important climate solution that we can all be a part of.

    • Safe Routes to School promoted biking to school.

    • Growing Gardens shared info about bees and had a honey tasting.

    • Food Corps shared about raising chicken and eggs and even gave people the opportunity to hold a baby chick (a kid–and grown up–fan favorite!).

    • Families for Climate shared about trees and shade equity and how beavers are an amazing nature-based climate solution.

  • A lot of amazing art was created! Making Earth Cool led a colorful and dimensional animal mask making with recycled materials.

  • We did some dancing! The Neighbors, a band made up of Scott’s music teacher and other neighbors in Cully played some great music that got us boogying.

  • Scott Elementary showed off their amazing gardens and Green Team! Scott School’s Green team showed off their garden areas where kids could put a vision they’d like to manifest for the planet on their wish tree, create their vision for their school landscape with more trees and wildlife at an art station, learn about pollinators at the Scott pollinator hotel that hosts beneficial insects, and participate in a plant scavenger hunt in the rain garden and pollinator garden to help kids find the insect’s food sources.

Thank you!

We are so grateful for the folks from Scott for hosting us and helping organize an incredible event. And we are especially grateful to all of you who came out to celebrate with us. It was a beautiful day and it felt so good to connect with folks in person again.
